With an extensive background in studying population, migration (emigration and immigration), and reproductive health, William “Bill” Ryerson has won several awards and distinctions, including the Nafis Sadik Prize for Courage, which he received from the Rotarian Action Group on Population and Development in 2006. Bill Ryerson today brings his knowledge of how population growth may affect climate change, politics, and emigration and immigration to his work at the Population Institute, where he is the CEO, and at the Population Media Center, which he founded in 1998 and where he serves as president.
The Population Institute’s Sustainable World Initiative was set up to address pressing concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability. The organization reports that human activity reached 100 percent of the full natural resource capacity of planet earth by the 1980s, and that our consumption only continues to rise. This is dangerous for everyone, but may be even more destabilizing for already vulnerable populations in developing countries.
The Sustainable World Initiative focuses primarily on different ways of raising awareness about best practices for working toward a sustainable world. The organization provides sustainability assessments, sustainability calculators, and research to recommend policy changes that may make a difference. The Initiative was founded by the Population Institute’s Edwin Barry, who passed away in May 2016.
