The Sabido methodology is a complex theory of communication and behavior that draws on a variety of sources, including Eric Bentley’s Dramatic Theory. Bentley’s description of melodramatic structure is of particular importance. Within this structure, good characters are those who follow the accepted rules and regulations of society, while negative characters ignore these social strictures. Over the course of the performance, characters on either side of the spectrum either move closer to these socials norms or tread farther away. Most importantly, melodramas feature a third character or group of characters who are unsure of how to feel regarding a specific social standard, allowing the audience to determine where they stand on the issue and who to champion throughout the performance.
William “Bill” Ryerson has spent nearly two decades as president of Population Media Center and served four years with the Population Institute as chairman. Through these roles, he has become highly knowledgeable on matters of migration, including immigration and emigration. In addition to learning about various aspects of migration, immigration, and emigration, Bill Ryerson has become interested in the Sabido methodology.

Over the course of his career as an executive leader with organizations such as the Population Institute in Washington, DC, and South Burlington, Vermont’s Population Media Center, William “Bill” Ryerson has become knowledgeable in various areas of population and migration, including patterns of immigration and emigration. Drawing on his understanding of global issues, including climate change, food crises, and emigration and immigration, Bill Ryerson supported development of the Population Institute’s Sustainable World Initiative. The Sustainable World Initiative is rooted in the concept of sustainability, which promotes the physical and technological development of humanity without sacrificing the planet’s ability to provide for future generations of humans, animals, and plant life. As recently as the 1960s, humans drew on just 50 percent of the earth’s available resources, a figure that has increased to about 140 percent of the planet’s long-term capacity in the present day. The Sustainable World Initiative is a comprehensive project that seeks to educate both media outlets and the general public on issues of sustainability and population. Specific areas of interest for the initiative include global food crises and droughts, an unnatural decrease in biodiversity in countless habitats, and matters of climate change. Through its Global Media Award program, Population Institute celebrates individuals from around the globe who write about population issues.
Presented to filmmakers, journalists, editorial cartoonists, and hosts of radio and television shows, the awards promote broader and more accurate media coverage of development and population issues. The awards also celebrate individuals who contribute to increased public awareness to the challenges associated with reproductive health and population. Furthermore, they serve the purpose of encouraging journalists, editors, and news directors to obtain a deeper understanding of population issues and to foster greater journalistic standards with regard to reporting. Awards granted by PI include best radio show, best editorial cartoonist, and best television show, among others. Judges make their selections based on the accuracy and fairness of reports and comprehension by the target audience. Furthermore, judges consider the individual’s contribution to a healthy debating environment for issues like population and reproductive health. |
