Recently, Mr. Ryerson was quoted in an article on the website Truthout. “Agriculture on the Brink,” by Dahr Jamail, investigated the threats to agriculture caused by climate change. Mr. Ryerson spoke about his concerns over the effects of fertilizer on soil quality. He noted that farmers are using more and more fertilizer, but are not seeing a corresponding gain in effectiveness. Over time, fertilizer use can lower the quality of soil.

William “Bill” Ryerson is knowledgeable in the areas of global population stabilization and migration (immigration and emigration), as well as the use of entertainment-education media to bring about social change. As CEO and founder of the Population Media Center, an international nonprofit organization, Bill Ryerson creates serialized dramas to provide role models for the audience and influence positive behavior change. This work is aligned with other international organizations such as the Post Carbon Institute and the Population Institute. Founded in 1969, the Population Institute works to improve the well-being of people and the planet by promoting reproductive health and rights. One initiative in support of this goal at the institute is the Sustainable World Initiative. Through the Sustainable World Initiative, the Population Institute provides education on the effects of overpopulation and issues related to the sustainability of the Earth’s resources. In addition to education, the institute develops tools to track sustainability metrics that will inform policymakers, and in order to better understand current trends, the institute partners with economists to study impacts related to population growth. For additional information on the Sustainable World Initiative, visit www.populationinstitute.org/programs/sustainability/. With an expert understanding of human migration, William “Bill” Ryerson possesses a wealth of knowledge around social issues that impact immigration and emigration flows. Outside of immigration, Bill Ryerson has expertise in disseminating entertainment-education through the Population Media Center (PMC), a company he founded in 1998. By creating serial dramas, better known as soap operas, PMC educates people in developing countries on environmental preservation, health, and human rights. In respect to the latter, the organization has made positive progress on the issue of gender equality. According to the Millennium Development Goals Report, legislative roles around the world are predominantly held by men. In fact, only 20 percent of women have a voice in government. PMC launched Yeken Kignit in response to the statistic. Translated to Looking Over One’s Daily Life, Yeken Kignit consists of 257 episodes that aired over more than two years on the National Service Radio of Ethiopia. The radio serial drama was complemented by Dhimbiba, another show with over 100 episodes. Following the airing of Yeken Kignit, researches studied the response of listeners. Both men and women expressed more interest in holding an office. Of the female respondents, 13.1 percent more women believed they are capable serving as a legislator. |
