Over the course of his career as an executive leader with organizations such as the Population Institute in Washington, DC, and South Burlington, Vermont’s Population Media Center, William “Bill” Ryerson has become knowledgeable in various areas of population and migration, including patterns of immigration and emigration. Drawing on his understanding of global issues, including climate change, food crises, and emigration and immigration, Bill Ryerson supported development of the Population Institute’s Sustainable World Initiative.
The Sustainable World Initiative is rooted in the concept of sustainability, which promotes the physical and technological development of humanity without sacrificing the planet’s ability to provide for future generations of humans, animals, and plant life. As recently as the 1960s, humans drew on just 50 percent of the earth’s available resources, a figure that has increased to about 140 percent of the planet’s long-term capacity in the present day.
The Sustainable World Initiative is a comprehensive project that seeks to educate both media outlets and the general public on issues of sustainability and population. Specific areas of interest for the initiative include global food crises and droughts, an unnatural decrease in biodiversity in countless habitats, and matters of climate change.
