A native of South Burlington, Vermont, William "Bill" Ryerson spends most of his professional career creating programs that help emerging economies empower themselves through his platform the Population Media Center (PMC). As founder and president, Bill Ryerson oversees programming to entertain and address societal issues in the featured communities.
In October, PMC announced the launch of a new program Ropa Guna Fal, which translates into You Reap What You Sow. Launched in September 2021, the show moved to the mountains of Nepal, where families and individuals live. This program features relevant issues to the community, such as reproductive health, education, and child marriage.
The Girls Not Brides organization reported that nearly 40 percent of Nepalese girls are married before they reach 18. Moreover, the Nepalese government is working to eradicate child bride marriages by evening, establishing goals to reduce the incidence by 2030. To address deeply entrenched issues in culture requires intentional, strategic, and large-scale interventions.
Through a partnership with Antenna Foundation Nepal (AFN), PMC can launch these programs, including Ropa Gun Fal. PMC worked with the Nepal team to create engaging segments pre-tested in listening groups. Taking constructive criticism from participants, the writers adjusted the scripts to appeal to Nepalese audiences. The organization follows up with listeners through social media, phone surveys, text messages, and phone surveys to get insight into the program’s reception.
